Origins

Divine Essence

Gandhikas & Gandhashastra
Ancient India’s fragrance heritage was shaped by the Gandhikas, skilled perfumers who crafted aromatic oils, incense, and scented preparations for daily life, temples, and royal courts. Their work was guided by Gandhashastra, the traditional Indian science of fragrances, which documented the creation and blending of perfumes, botanical extracts, and aromatic formulations. Together, they reflect India’s long-standing expertise in the art and science of scent, laying the foundation for a rich perfumery tradition that continues to inspire fragrance creation today. Gandhayukti refers to the ancient art of blending fragrant materials, preserving India’s traditional techniques of perfume creation.

The Roman Connection
For centuries, India was renowned for its rich traditions of fragrance creation, attar distillation, and the use of botanical fragrance materials. Ingredients such as Jatamansi (Spikenard), sandalwood, and malabathrum travelled through ancient maritime trade routes linking India with Rome and Roman Egypt, where they were valued for perfumes and scented preparations. Historic centres such as Kannauj further strengthened India’s reputation for perfumery, producing fragrant oils and natural extracts that were traded far beyond the Indian subcontinent.
